Student woodcut style illustration and pattern making assignment
Client:
Oregon Soap Company – Founded in 1994 and headquartered in Portland, Or., Oregon Soap Co specializes in the manufacture of organic, sustainably produced liquid and bar soaps. They primarily focus on the sale and distribution of soaps to commercial and wholesale to a wide variety of vendors. They sell soap in bulk form, produce custom “private label” products, as well as pre-packaged, ready for resale products. Many of their products are sold in bulk or with no label so individual companies can rebadge and resell their products. Currently OSC distributes their own brand through small organic groceries across the Northwest.
Situation:
OSC has been producing retail-ready organic bar soaps for a number of years, but it has never been a focus of the business. They have also produced many “private label” products for resellers as well, but would like to take their products and branding to a new market and increase their distribution channels.
They are going to produce a new line of natural fruit inspired soaps that will be distributed through all of the Made In Oregon stores. The product will be sold under the “Oregon Soap Company” name but the line will be called NW Bounty. The different fruits will include scents based upon Northwest grown produce such as Banana, Pineapple, Pear, Cherry, Blueberry, Lychee, Fig, Starfruit, Strawberry, Peach, Quince, Raspberry
Objective:
To develop an all-natural, recyclable/compostable packaging system that is inexpensive to produce but reflects a hand-crafted and “authentic” feel while also being refined enough to feel like an appropriate “gift” item to be sold through Made in Oregon.
Strategy:
To develop a label and wrapper for easy updating and brand management that utilizes modular patterns and spot illustrations to highlight the unique scents of the soaps.
Constraints:
The final design MUST be a standard label shape and fit around a standard bar of soap and seal the decorative wrapper. Typographic selections and layout of the label should reflect the provided style example while pairing well with the more decorative patterned wrapper.
